Christmas Eve is here, and it comes at a hectic time for merchants and Washington, DC, observers. President Donald Trump threw a wrench into the bipartisan $ 900 billion emergency bill on Tuesday night when he called on Congress to change the package to include larger direct aid payments and budget cuts in what he considered “wasteful and unnecessary items.”

S&P 500 index
closed slightly on Wednesday, bringing earnings to 14.2% year-to-date. The
Dow Jones Industrial Average
sits at 30,129.83, an increase of 5.6% in 2020. Congress is now trying to get relief across the finish line. In the meantime, investors are getting a much-needed break from the action starting on Christmas Eve.
Is the stock market closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2020?
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq close at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Christmas Eve. Both are closed on Christmas Day on Friday. US bond markets and US over-the-counter markets also close at 2:00 pm on December 24 and all day on December 25.
Are fairs abroad open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2020?
The Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Tokyo Stock Exchange are open both days. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange closes at 12 noon local time on Christmas Eve and all day on Christmas Day.
The Toronto Stock Exchange ends its session at 1:00 p.m. ET on Christmas Eve. It is closed on Christmas Day. The
London Stock Exchange
closes at 12:30 GMT on Thursday and all day Friday.
Can I still bring Christmas Eve?
You wouldn’t be alone. Christmas Eve usually has a much lower volume than an average day. If we go back to 2007 – excluding the years when Christmas Day fell on a weekend – the average Christmas Eve volume on the NYSE Composite and Nasdaq Composite was 36.8% of a normal day in that period, according to data from FactSet compiled by Dow Jones Market. How have stocks performed on Christmas Eve?
Excluding the years when the market closed on Christmas Eve, the S&P 500 made an average of 0.2% gains on Christmas Eve, higher than the daily average gains of 0.13%, according to Dow Jones Market Data. But the average movement of the index on Christmas Eve is 0.48%, lower than the daily average movement of 0.74%.
