The 2021 iPhone, be it the iPhone 12s or the iPhone 13, is about to be a minor upgrade over the iPhone 12. While we’re still months away from launch, rumors are about what to expect of the iPhone from 2021. upgrade is starting to take hold.

Appoint
It’s immediately unclear whether this year’s iPhone will be called the iPhone 12s or the iPhone 13. According to a report, Apple internally refers to this year as an upgrade from the “S” year, implying minor changes from the existing iPhone 12.
However, that doesn’t mean that Apple will use “iPhone 12s” as the marketing name for the iPhone lineup for 2021. It’s possible that this year’s devices will be called the iPhone 12s or iPhone 13, or that Apple may decide that 2021 is the year. is where it completely moves away from the numbers. This would follow in the footsteps of what Apple has done with the iPad lineup over the years.
iPhone 12s / iPhone 13 screen, design and size
In terms of design, the iPhone lineup for 2021 is expected to look nearly identical to the existing iPhone 12. A report suggests the iPhone 13 will be slightly thicker than the iPhone 12. The height and width of the devices will said to remain unchanged, but thickness will increase by 0.26 mm.
While demand for the iPhone 12 mini was reportedly weaker than Apple expected, there is currently no indication that Apple plans to leave the form factor this year. A Macotakara Supply report said all four iPhone 13 models will have the same general form factors as their iPhone 12 predecessors.
This means that we can expect four different devices on three different screen sizes:
- A 2021 iPhone model with a 5.4-inch OLED screen
- Two 2021 iPhone models with 6.1-inch OLED screens
- A 2021 iPhone model with a 6.7-inch OLED screen
But while screen sizes are likely to stay the same, Apple is reportedly planning to upgrade the iPhone 13 with 120Hz ProMotion display technology.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the iPhone 13 is likely to use LTPO technology to reduce the display’s power consumption. This, in turn, gives Apple room for the battery to enable 120Hz functionality next year. Apple first incorporated LTPO – or low-temperature polysilicone and oxide display – technology in the Apple Watch Series 4, so it makes sense to extend the power-saving feature to the iPhone series next year.
Finally, what about the notch? Every year the notch and Face ID cutout is expected to get smaller, but so far there hasn’t been a major change in the design.
Macotakara has reported that this could change in 2021, with the iPhone 13 having a smaller notch than the iPhone 12. Apple has reportedly changed the position of the top receiver to reduce the size of the TrueDepth camera, which could make the notch are cut out smaller.
Camera
First, for the rear cameras, we can see some interesting changes in terms of design with the iPhone 13. The camera bump remains, but Apple can add a sapphire glass that covers all three lenses so they look like a single camera . instead of three separate lenses.
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max offered remarkable improvements over their predecessors in camera technology. In 2021, Apple is expected to extend some of the new camera enhancements to the rest of the iPhone 13 series.
A Macotakara report noted that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max’s camera module will be the same size, suggesting the smaller Pro model will have the same camera lenses as the 13 Pro Max – including the ultra-wide lens with sensor-shift stabilization. Last year, Apple only added better stabilization and 2.5x optical zoom on iPhone 12 Pro Max.
With the release of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple has added a new LiDAR scanner to the rear camera for depth detection capabilities, which can also be seen on the iPad Pro. A supply chain report says Apple will expand the LiDAR sensor beyond the ‘Pro’ models with this year’s iPhone 13.
It’s very likely that Apple has other camera improvements in store for the iPhone 12s series, be it computer photography enhancements, new hardware features, or something completely different. We will be sure to update this post as we learn more.
Performance
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are powered by Apple’s A14 Bionic processor. As Apple continues to improve its internal silicon work, we expect the iPhone 12s / iPhone 13 to be powered by Apple’s latest processor, likely called the A15 Bionic processor.
It is not yet clear what awaits the A15 Bionic processor, but a report of it TrendForce has said the chip will be built on a 5nm process similar to the A14 Bionic processor. The change will be that Apple will adopt a new 5nm + technology to improve performance.
As we explained in November:
TSMC refers to 5nm + as N5P, describing it as a performance-enhanced version that combines more power with improved energy efficiency to improve battery life (or, as is more likely with Apple, allow smaller capacity batteries) .
Exactly what this means in terms of measurable performance and efficiency remains to be seen, but we expect to learn more soon.
Connectivity
5G connectivity was one of the main features of the iPhone 12 last year, but only US iPhone 12 Pro models support mmWave 5G, likely due to the additional cost to Apple.
This year, a report has already suggested that Apple has added an additional supplier of mmWave 5G antennas and is placing “a large order” for it in anticipation of the iPhone 13. This implies that Apple may be planning to expand mmWave 5G beyond The United States. versions of the iPhone 12 to the rest of the world.
Gateless
Reports have also suggested that 2021 could be the year Apple will introduce an iPhone without a Lightning port. This would be the very first portless iPhone, and most recently Bloomberg reported it as something being tested internally at Apple.
It’s unclear if it’s something Apple will launch this year, but Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted in 2019 that Apple would launch an iPhone without a Lightning port in 2021.

Touch ID
Could 2021 be the year when Touch ID returns to the iPhone and coexists with Face ID? There are several characters that refer to ‘yes’.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported in August 2019 that it will release an iPhone with both Face ID and Touch ID below the display in 2021. In addition, the reliable leaker L0vetodream has also reported that in-screen Touch ID will soon make its way to the iPhone.
Most recent, Bloomberg reported that Apple is testing support for an in-screen fingerprint reader for this year’s iPhone. It’s unclear in the end if this feature will pass for the iPhone 12S, but it’s a thing in testing.
Offering both Touch ID and Face ID would increase the overall ease and speed of unlocking iPhone. A user registers their fingerprints and facial signature and the phone can be unlocked as soon as either recognition is successful. There is also the common problem of Face ID not working with face masks, which can be solved by making Touch ID available as an option as well.
Finally, if users wanted their iPhones to be as secure as possible, they could theoretically enable both Touch ID and Face ID, and the iPhone wouldn’t be unlocked until both forms of biometric authentication were successfully recognized.
Release date and prices of iPhone 12s / iPhone 13
The iPhone 12 was launched later than usual, likely due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The launch of the iPhone 12 was also staggered, with Apple first releasing the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, followed by the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro max a month later.
This year, Kuo has reported that the iPhone 13’s mass production schedule will be the same as previous iPhone models before the 12 series. That means we can expect all iPhone 13 models from September 2021, barring any delays.
There’s no word on whether Apple has any price changes in store for the iPhone 12s lineup this year. Like marketing names, iPhone pricing information rarely leaks before announcement.

As you can see, the iPhone 13 / iPhone 12s will not be a radical upgrade compared to the iPhone 12.
