iPadOS 14.5 brings emoji search and a new landscape splash screen to the iPad

In addition to the big changes introduced with iOS 14.5, such as the ability to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch, there are a few small but notable changes in iPadOS 14.5. For the first time, the iPad now supports emoji search and a new landscape splash screen.

Emoji searches came to the iPhone with iOS 14 last fall, but curiously it was missing on iPadOS until the release of iPadOS 14.4 this week. With this release, iPad users can now search for the specific emoji they want to use.

To use this feature, simply open the emoji picker from the iPadOS keyboard and you will see a whole new search field. It works with both the software keyboard and if you have a standalone keyboard, such as the Magic Keyboard, connected to your iPad.

Another small but notable change in iPadOS 14.5 is a landscape splash screen, which was first noticed by 9to5Mac reader Steven. Now when your iPad boots up, the Apple logo will display correctly in landscape orientation if connected to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard. If it is not connected to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard, the Apple logo will still be displayed in portrait orientation.

These are minor features compared to the other changes in iOS 14.5, but they are still worth noting for iPad and iPad Pro users. Searching for emojis was a glaring omission specifically when iPadOS 14 was released last fall.
