Indotel’s decision to face the stolen cell phone activation has been overturned

Citizens consider the resolution proposed by the Council of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) to be good for taking pictures and fingerprints when activating a cell phone.

In a tour by reporters from the Listín Diario, some were in favor of the measure.

“I find it very interesting because we have a very high crime rate in the country and this would reduce cell phone theft, it is a good measure of what Indotel is taking,” said a citizen who refused to identify himself.

While Yanirys Peralta understands that this resolution will reduce uncertainty.

“I agree in part because this way can regulate cell phone theft, but I also understand that the cell phone system comes with GPS protection,” said Peralta,

In the same way, Luis Alberto expressed his agreement with this new measure.

“It’s a safeguard for someone, at least for those who have expensive cell phones and can protect themselves from those unclean spirits, those unclean spirits who steal cell phones,” Alberto said.

Despite the fact that the majority of the interviewees agreed with this new security system to be implemented by the telecommunications regulator, others are skeptical about its operation and some even call it negative.

‘I disagree with the photo. The footprint, yes, the photo exposes the user, ” another citizen told this newspaper.

Yesterday, Indotel reported that a new resolution will go into effect on January 11, but yesterday it was approved on February 6 at the request of the service providers to complete the required work, such as taking photos and fingerprints.

This is added to resolution 92-19 to take control of the GSM register and prevent the activation of stolen equipment.

Indotel President Nelson Arroyo told Listín Diario on Monday that through these resolutions, a record of the IMEIs of the mobile phones will be obtained at the time of activation.

The IMEI, in English stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity (International Mobile Equipment Identity), makes it possible to easily locate the mobile phone through that numbering, or at least the lock in case of loss or theft.

Determination

Resolution 070-19, Arroyo said, is waiting for service providers to install the required equipment and will be a requirement for people going to activate a cell phone, such as taking photos and placing their fingerprints.

This provision, “Standard governing the contracting and activation of public telecommunications services”, was approved by the Indotel Board, but is expected to come into effect on February 6.

Yesterday, the Listín published an editorial on the topic, calling for tougher sanctions on stores buying cell phones knowing they are dubiously owned, in relation to the armed robbery of El Día newspaper director and his family last Saturday in a park in La community of San Cristóbal.

In the coming weeks, Indotel will launch an explanatory process of the standard so that its importance is understood.

Phone

Claudia García, executive director of the Association of Communication and Technology Companies (Comtec), said on Monday that the operators have adapted their networks and systems to ensure that the Denied Series system is accessed during registration or access to mobile terminal devices on your network .

In addition, the providers’ customers have mechanisms for reporting stolen or lost terminals operating in person in their service centers during business hours and by phone in 24-hour mode for seven days.
