The CCTV video, posted on Twitter by the Indian Ministry of Railways, showed a station worker at Vangani station in Mumbai sprinting to save a child as an oncoming train rushed towards them.
The worker lifted the child onto the platform just before the train would have hit.
The ministry hailed the employee, counsel Mayur Shelkhe, as a “good Samaritan.”
“We commend his exemplary courage and utter dedication to duty,” they added in the tweet.
Indian Railways is the world’s fourth largest railway operator and India’s largest employer.
On March 25, 2020, the rail network was suspended for the first time in 167 years when Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The following month, the rail operator announced plans to convert as many as 20,000 old railroad cars into patient isolation wards as the virus spread.
India is currently facing a worsening second wave of coronavirus. On Sunday, the country reported 261,500 new cases – the highest figure in one day to date, according to data from the Indian Ministry of Health.
