India bans export of Covid drug Remdesivir amid virus spike

India has banned exports of drug Remdesivir, used to treat Covid-19, as country recorded record daily new coronavirus registrations cases.

The government took the step amid a sudden spike in demand for the injection, the Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday, adding that “there is a potential for a further increase in this demand in the coming days.”

Seven Indian companies Manufacture Remdesivir under a voluntary license agreements with Gilead Sciences Inc. They have an installed capacity of approximately 3.9 million units per month.

The Indian government is also taking steps to counter hoarding and black marketing of the drug and expand production of the drug.
