In the presence of diplomats, Bukele discredits the international press and denies that the Biden government rejected his request for a meeting | News from El Salvador

This is despite the fact that various sources indicate that in Washington the US government closed its doors.

During his time as President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele has had a turbulent relationship with critical and independent media, whom he is accused of lying when they publish messages that are unfavorable to his government.

On Thursday afternoon, the president extended his efforts to disqualify journalistic reports and accused international Associated Press (AP) journalist Joshua Goodman of lying.

“We cannot trust the international media. For example, the AP said that I had gone to the United States to request a meeting with President Biden and they denied it. That’s a lie, here’s the head of US missions and he can confirm it, ”the president said at a meeting with the country’s accredited diplomatic corps.

Earlier this week, Goodman reported that Bukele sought meetings with Biden government officials in Washington DC and these were turned down. According to the report published in the AP and recorded by multiple media outlets inside and outside the United States, sources close to the new US administration refused to meet with Bukele due to his apparently undemocratic behavior and also to prevent him from making electoral use of the meetings .

Washington DC sources of El Diario de Hoy, with firsthand knowledge of the Biden administration, confirmed information similar to that published by the AP.

This one hit Bukele, who tried to present himself as a friend of Washington, but whose abuse of power leads to harsh punishments in an America that has changed a lot since Trump left power.

For this reason, he tried to discredit the AP report from the start. One of his closest officials, CEPA President Federico Anliker, even hinted that the Washington Post, which included the note, was dealing with one of El Salvador’s main opposition leaders.

Despite his attempts to disqualify this report and deny that it was not received by the Biden administration in Washington, Democratic Party sources back their original version and confirm that the Salvadoran president is lying.

“The inexpensive student”
Mauricio Alarcón-Salvador is an Ecuadorian lawyer and advocate of freedom of the press in his country and the region. Every time Bukele discredits the national press, he reiterates that his style is very similar to that of former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, an enemy of the media when he ruled that South American country.

Faced with this disqualification from the AP and the international press, Alarcón-Salvador recalls that in his country the then president and now fugitive Correa “was an expert not only in discrediting the national press but also the international one.
Conspiracy theories were often articulated and also said that the international press was obeying orders from outside governments to destabilize their governments.

The lawyer explains that he has called some media hypocrites and liars. For this reason he adds that “this student you have in El Salvador (Bukele) surpasses itself”.

In fact, Correa recently dedicated a tweet in honor of Bukele’s handling of independent media in El Salvador, which he constantly disqualifies and has been harassed by officials and fans, and the power of the state has even been used to intimidate them.
