CHICAGO (WLS) – Public health officials in Illinois reported 1,959 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 22 related deaths on Monday.

There have been a total of 1,304,200 COVID cases, including 21,685 deaths in the state since the start of the pandemic.

COVID Vaccine: Chicago opens vaccinations to all residents 16 and older on Monday

As Chicago joins the rest of Illinois to expand vaccine suitability as widely as possible, the state appears to be shifting its allocation strategy, sending fewer vaccines downstate and more to the Chicago area.

While the discontinuation of use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has hit supplies, total allocations for the Chicago area are skyrocketing.

DuPage County will receive an all-time high of over 44,000 first doses this week, 85% more than its previous weekly high. It comes after it was announced that the state of Chicago was sending more than 50,000 doses.

“It is my expectation that as we get more vaccine, more and more people, including younger people, will get the vaccine,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Where does that offer come from? After months of assigning vaccines based on the county population, state data shows that more than 60 counties, mostly in the downstate, are receiving zero first doses from the state this week.

As of Sunday night, there were 2,128 patients in Illinois who were in the hospital with COVID-19. Of these, 491 patients were in the ICU and 227 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilator.

In the past 24 hours, laboratories reported testing 47,506 samples out of a total of 21,776,820 since the start of the pandemic.
