iFixit starts tearing down AirPods Max

iFixit today began disassembling Apple’s new AirPods Max headphones for one of the traditional device disassembly, with the goal of determining whether the ‌AirPods Max‌ is to some extent repairable or an ‘e-waste disaster’. The teardown is underway and will be updated in the coming days.

This is an early, partial teardown that also involves taking a quick X-ray in the headphones. The X-ray image offers a glimpse of the battery cell in each earcup, dual speaker driver magnets, alignment magnets, microphone brackets and more.

iFixit did not find getting into the ‌AirPods Max‌ easy and there was quite a bit of glue involved. There are two logic boards littered inside with chips, which iFixit will want to identify in more detail later.

No other details are available on the AirPods Max so far as teardown is underway, but iFixit says it will be updated in the next few days and there is “a lot more to come” including some surprises for headphone fans.
