iFixit shares the first AirPods Max teardown

iFixit traditionally shares a teardown of every new Apple product, and this time it was no different with AirPods Max. While this is more of a first look at the inside of the headphones, iFixit said the AirPods Max isn’t as easy to take apart as other over-ear headphones.

As we already know, AirPods Max comes with two 40mm dynamic drivers, two magnetic ear pads, eight noise canceling microphones and two H1 chips inside – one for each side of the headphones.

An X-ray of the AirPods Max revealed that Apple’s over-ear headphones have two battery cells, but both in one ear cup. iFixit noted that there are some solder joints and wires near the batteries, but they still haven’t found any connectors to easily replace the batteries.

Although the speaker units appear to be protected with screws, there are parts of AirPods Max that contain glue. iFixit had to heat the headphones to completely disassemble them. “These headphones aren’t as easy to take apart as they let you hear (or as you’d expect from other headphones),” the company said.

You can see the images below showing the AirPods Max’s internal components such as the Bluetooth chip, audio amplifier, accelerometer and more. iFixit says it will be sharing a deeper teardown of the AirPods Max in the coming days.

Don’t worry, we’ll come back to give you the full breakdown and breakdown analysis later. For now, we’ll just leave it here.
