I received two incentive payments of $ 1,200 last time. Will I get two checks for $ 600 this time? Will there even be an incentive?

Dear Moneyist,

To my surprise, during the first round of economic impact payments, I got two incentive checks. One was deposited into my bank and the other was an actual physical check. Will I also get two incentive payments this time? I have friends who haven’t received any checks, and they were (understandably) outraged that I received more than one.

Wait for round two

Dear waiting,

Don’t you mean round three and four? That would be what you would receive if you received two checks for $ 600 in a second round of incentive payments. On Sunday, President Trump passed the $ 900 billion pandemic relief package into law, preventing a government-wide shutdown. I wouldn’t quite spend that second check yet, though.

The Internal Revenue Service, after a year of workers who have worked overtime and worked tirelessly to get economic impact payments to millions of Americans, is likely to spot their mistake and adjust the payment on your 2020 tax returns. Rarely are such windfalls without a price. Such errors are usually fixed manually or by computer. You have been warned.

Some people are angry that they did not receive a check big enough or no payment at all for economic impact, other taxpayers say they received incentive checks for deceased relatives. The past year has not been in a straight line. A man told me he had been “punished” by the government for being responsible for filing his 2019 taxes early – and receiving $ 200.

The money can be returned via check or money order in the format “2020EIP”, plus the Social Security Number or Taxpayer ID of the check recipient. Those people who have received a paper check and have not cashed it can write “void” on the back of the check’s underwriting section and return it to the IRS, according to IRS instructions (see Q41), with explanations.

People who have received no or only a small amount this year and believe their income will fall below the required check threshold next year may still receive incentive payments next year. The EIP is technically a prepayment of a tax credit on your 2020 tax return. The IRS uses the 2019 tax returns to measure people’s income; Tax returns 2018 are used as a Plan B.

The IRS has sent 150 million incentive checks, totaling about $ 290 billion in checks.

The Moneyist: I made $ 100,000 in 2019, but much less in 2020. Why didn’t I get a stimulus check? How is that fair?

Ahead of the November presidential election, House Democrats had cut their version of the new stimulus bill from $ 3.4 trillion to $ 2.2 trillion, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin seemed amenable to a total stimulus package of $ 1.8 trillion. With the US reaching record daily COVID-19 cases, more public health steps such as shutdown may be needed,

The news of a new stimulus could not have come too soon. As a result of improved unemployment benefits and incentive controls, both of which were key parts of the CARES Act in March, median American checking account balances increased 65% from the year in April, according to a JPMorgan Chase Institute JPM,
