Huge traffic jam at night traps 1000 drivers in Japan

According to a report on Friday, more than 1,000 drivers in Japan had to spend the night in a hellish 9-mile traffic jam caused by a snowstorm.

The commuter nightmare on the Kanetsu Expressway – which connects Tokyo to Niigata prefecture – lasted more than 40 hours in some parts, leaving motorists without food or water, CNN reported.

The horrible traffic started when a car was buried by snow during a snowstorm on Wednesday evening – bringing traffic to a stop, the outlet reported, citing the firm that operates the thoroughfare, the Nippon Expressway Company.

The number of tortured drivers then peaked, reaching a peak on Thursday evening – about 15 kilometers when rescuers shared bread, rice balls and bottles of water.

As of Friday, lanes leaving Tokyo were cleared – but at least 1,000 motorists entering the city were still trapped in the snowy mess, the outlet reported.

Meanwhile, New York City had its own blizzard this week, with Winter Storm Gail dumping nearly a foot of snow on the Big Apple on Wednesday night.
