Here’s how to make a dedicated server from Valheim or host multiplayer games with friends.

How to host Valheim Multiplayer

To play Valheim online with a small group of friends, you don’t have to go to extra trouble to host a dedicated server from Valheim.

Here’s how to easily host a multiplayer game in Valheim for your friends.

  • Create your world (and link it with any or custom seed)
  • Go to the Start World tab, mark the options for Start Server and Community Server
  • Enter the password of your server and press start

Valheim servers come with a password system as standard, meaning there are no traditional public servers.

Instead, players have to find Valheim servers or create their own.

With this in mind, here’s how to host a Valheim dedicated server.

How to host a dedicated Valheim server

To create a Valheim server for online multiplayer with friends, you have to go through the following steps:

  • Choose the machine on which you will be hosting your Valheim dedicated server
  • Via Steam, find the Valheim Dedicated Server in your library (you must enable Tools first) and then install it
  • Find the folder where you installed Valheim Dedicated Server (the default is: Program Files (x86)> Steam> steamapps> common> Valheim Dedicated Server)
  • Go to line 7, where you will see a line starting with “start valheim_server”
  • Edit the following (if not already changed in your data):
    • -name “My server”
      • Add whatever you want your Valheim server to be named (don’t name it the same as your world name and vice versa)
    • port 2456
      • Change this to your default Port Forwarding (found in your router settings)
    • -world “Dedicated”
      • Add what you want your Valheim world to be named (don’t call it the same as your world name and vice versa)
    • password “Secret”
      • Add whatever you want your Valheim server password. If you want a public server that is accessible to everyone, you can leave this field blank
  • Load your server, fire up Valheim and start playing!

There are no set rules for hosting a dedicated server from Valheim in terms of what your machine needs.

However, there are some recommendations such as having a strong CPU to handle the constant load.

If you have a powerful PC, you can probably run your own Valheim server on it while you play the game. Keep in mind that if you run into problems, the server will go down for everyone else.

If not, you can run your dedicated Valheim server on another PC, just make sure it stays on so that the server stays open.
