How to Get an Amazon Echo to Tell You the Temperature of a Room

Small thermometers that you can buy and hang anywhere are fairly cheap, but you don’t need one if you have an Amazon Echo. That is, if you have one of two types of ultrasounds: a fourth generation Echo or a second generation Echo PlusBoth have temperature sensors built into the smart speakers; you just need to pay attention to your wording to make sure you get the result for your room, rather than outside.

The surest way to test this is to ask Alexa to tell you the temperature in full. Assuming everything is set up correctly on your device, you will get the temperature for your current location just like you normally would. Remember that number and ask Alexa to tell you the indoor temperature. Specific: “Alexa, what’s the temperature inside.” Using the word “inside” instead of “inside” will not work. Don’t ask me why.

(I’ve also found that if you designate a room for your Echo device, use the Appliances tab in the app, you should also be able to ask Alexa “What is the temperature [name of room]

The number you are told should be the current temperature of the room your Echo is in. And you can double check this figure through the Alexa app> Devices> Echo and Alexa> “Name of your Echo device.” Scroll down until you see the ‘Temperature sensor’ field:

Obviously, turning on a fan when it gets too hot is a perfect routine to set up, but you’re limited only by your imagination (and the number of Alexa-compatible devices you own). Me? I wish my ultrasound would scream the temperature once every hour. I wonder if I can build a routine for that.
