How it started … how it goes: Phil Foden shares a photo of ball boy days after Liverpool’s heroism

How it started … how it goes: Phil Foden shares a throwback photo of himself as a ball boy at the Etihad next to one of his brilliant fourth goal in Manchester City’s stunning win over Liverpool

  • Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in the Eredivisie on Sunday
  • Phil Foden put in a brilliant performance by scoring his team’s fourth goal
  • The midfielder has established himself as one of the world’s best young players

Phil Foden was the star of the show when Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1 on Sunday and took to Twitter to remind fans how far he has come after the game.

The 20-year-old put down a fine performance by scoring his side’s fourth goal as they secured their first win at Anfield in 18 years.

He then shared two photos side by side, one of him as a ball boy at a City match in 2014 and one of him scoring his goal against the Reds.

Following the recent social media trend, he endorsed the ‘how it started … how it goes’.

Liverpool’s title defense appears to have ended at the feet of goalkeeper Alisson Becker as two terrible mistakes helped City give their big win.

With the match even at 1-1 with 17 minutes to go, the Brazilian’s errant passing earned the front runners two goals – including Raheem Sterling’s first at Anfield since leaving in 2015.

Alisson was back on the team after missing the weekday defeat to Brighton with illness, but he will be sick looking back on his part in City’s first win in the field since 2003 and only their second in 34 visits.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick in the 63rd minute – the end of a home goal drought nine minutes less than seven hours – had wiped out the opener from Ilkay Gundogan, who redeemed himself after missing the spot in the first half.

Alisson then cleared a pass straight to Phil Foden, who drove forward and thrust for Gundogan to score nine goals in his last eleven league matches.

It was even worse to follow when the Brazilian repeated the foul even closer to goal with Bernardo Silva hitting Sterling on the head to nod home his 100th goal for Pep Guardiola while Foden put the finishing touches late.

Victory extended City’s winning run to 14 games, leaving Liverpool 10 points behind after playing one more game and even in this season full of surprises, a comeback from that position seems unlikely.

It meant Gundogan’s penalty miss late in the first half – City’s third this season and their third in four tries in this game – and Guardiola kicking a bucket in frustration were a distant memory.
