Houston woman receives second COVID-19 vaccine dose after tweeting from Mayor Sylvester Turner

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – As more Houstonians begin to receive their second COVID-19 vaccine dose, the date printed on the vaccination card for the second dose may not be the date they receive it.

Currently, thousands of people receive their COVID-19 vaccine every day at various locations in Houston. It’s a shot that Kimberly Mannino told ABC13 she loved getting.

“I felt like I had won the lottery,” Mannino recalls.

Mannino, who is part of the second eligible group, said it took three months to get the first dose. She received the first dose at Delmar Stadium last month, where she was given a card with a second dose date. But when she contacted the Houston Health Department, she was told there were no appointments.

“I felt like it was a slap in the face for following every rule,” recalls Mannino. “Aside from work, because I’m an essential worker, and the grocery store, I didn’t leave home.”

Frustrated, Mannino took to social media and tweeted Mayor Sylvester Turner to address the situation. Before she knew it, she received a call and an appointment for a second dose this week.

“I don’t think I understand all this bureaucracy if it’s the exact same vaccine,” said Mannino.

The health department said the date of the second dose on the chart may not be when you get an injection. Instead of 21 or 28 days later, it could be 42. The CDC said that as long as you get a second dose within 42 days, the vaccine will still be effective.

The City of Houston said it will reach for your second dose 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. A spokesperson said that even with comprehensive suitability for all Texas adults, there are plenty of photos out there for those who need one – it may not be as fast as you want.
