Houston Weather: patchy fog this morning, strong cold front on the way

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – We see some patchy dense fog early this morning, some locations northwest of Houston reporting views as small as 1/2 mile. That will gradually become apparent throughout the morning. We get limited sunshine during the day with highs in the mid 70’s and a 20% chance of a short shower. The next system we keep an eye on is a cold front that will bring a lot of rain late Wednesday and early Thursday.

When will the next storm reach Houston?

Our last storm system of 2020 will arrive with a thunderstorm on Wednesday and a strong cold front on Wednesday evening.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Showers and thunderstorms are always possible on Wednesdays, but probably look like evenings and nights. As this weather system appears to be slowing down, a cold rain may linger after sunrise on Thursday. The current expectation is that most will receive 1-2 “rain with isolated spots turning 3-5”. Flooding in the street is possible on Wednesday evening.

Are we going through heavy weather?

Bad weather is possible, but still unlikely. Light winds would be our biggest threat when bad weather occurs.

What is the weather forecast for New Years Eve in Houston?

New Years Eve brings us cold, windy and wet weather, but we do expect the rain to disappear before midnight. The temperature will probably linger all day in the 1940s. At the stroke of midnight on New Years Day, temperatures will likely be in the upper 30 and 40 degrees with a wind chill factor close to freezing.

Wait, you said “freezing cold”. Will snow fall ?!

Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but there’s a chance that snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this point it appears likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact trail the storm system takes across the state, so we can’t rule it out entirely for Southeast Texas just yet.

So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is a very, very low probability that does not equal zero, but don’t hope for it yet.
