Phillip Lindsay has agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Texans, his caretaker manager announced on Friday
The deal is worth $ 3.25 million with $ 1 million guaranteed and $ 500,000 in incentives, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Lindsay joins veterans David Johnson and Mark Ingram on the position. Houston restructured Johnson’s contract earlier this low season, choosing to bring him back at a cheaper price rather than lowering his $ 9 million salary for 2021.
The Texans run of David Johnson and backup Duke Johnson struggled in 2020, finishing last in the NFL in Football Outsiders’ DVOA. Duke Johnson was released earlier in the off-season.
Lindsay, 26, became an unrestricted free agent when the Broncos withdrew the RFA bid they placed on him, which allowed them to match any contract but would not have offered Denver compensation if he signed with a different team.
Lindsay, who played collegiate in Colorado and made the 2018 roster to the Broncos as an undeveloped free agent, rushed to 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns in his rookie season. He was also selected for the Pro Bowl.
He followed that up with another 1,000-yard season in 2019, rushing to 1,011 yards and seven touchdowns.
Despite Lindsay’s success, the Broncos signed Melvin Gordon back to a two-year $ 16 million contract in free agency in the following off-season. His production dropped to 502 yards and a touchdown in 2020 as he had to split the charge with Gordon and a combination of injuries that ultimately put him on an injured reserve.
In three seasons, Lindsay has rushed for 2,550 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also has 77 receptions for 465 yards and a touchdown.
