Houston Texans’ Brandin Cooks restructures deal to ease team salary ceiling, source says

HOUSTON – The Texans have restructured Brandin Cooks’ wide receiver contract, sources confirm ESPN.

According to a source, the restructuring will void the last season of Cooks’ deal with the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, meaning he will now be a free agent after the 2022 season.

NFL Network first reported that Cooks’ contract had been restructured. The restructuring, which will free up more than $ 6 million in cap space for the Texans, converts $ 10 million in Cooks’ base salary into a signing bonus. Before the restructuring, Cooks had a cap of $ 12 million by 2021, but he ran out of guaranteed money on his contract.

The restructuring will guarantee Cooks’ salary in 2021 and add $ 1 million to the contract for the next two seasons.

Cooks comes off its fifth season with over 1,000 receiving yards. The receiver, who plays in his fourth team in seven seasons, had 81 catches for 1,150 yards and six touchdowns in his first season in Houston.

Together with Cooks, the Texans have the fifth round of 2020 Isaiah Coulter and slot receivers Randall Cobb and Keke Coutee under contract.

Wide receiver Will Fuller played on his fifth-year option before being suspended in November. Houston didn’t use the franchise tag on Fuller, so he’ll be an unlimited free agent when the new league year starts next week.
