DeJoy could only be removed by the Postal Service’s Board of Directors, as Biden cannot remove him directly.
Earlier this month, Ron Bloom, a former Obama government official nominated by Trump to the Board of Directors in 2019, was elected chairman. Bloom succeeded Robert Duncan, a Trump-appointed Republican who is still a member of the Postal Service Board.
DeJoy, a GOP mega-donor who previously ran a logistics company, angered the Democrats shortly after he became postmaster general last year for implementing cost-cutting measures at the postal service that resulted in delays in mail delivery.
In response to the backlash at the time, DeJoy announced last August that he would pause changes to postal services until after the November elections “to avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail.” Trump had spent months trying to cast doubt on the reliability of postal ballots as many people looked for alternatives to personal voting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But DeJoy is reportedly considering additional operational changes. The Washington Post reported last week that DeJoy is preparing to designate all first-class mail for a delivery period of three to five days, rather than allowing a separate tier to deliver mail within two days. At the end of last year, only 38 percent of first-class mail was delivered on time.
In response to the Washington Post report, Connolly, who chairs a House Oversight subcommittee with jurisdiction over the Postal Service, also called on Biden last week to “immediately” remove and replace the entire Board of Directors to the road. free for DeJoy’s removal.
Biden’s government has said Biden plans to fill the vacancies with officials “reflecting his commitment to the US Postal Service workers,” but has not yet provided a timeline.
