Hospital admissions in COVID-19 show a slight increase

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people hospitalized for the new coronavirus increased somewhat, based on state data, as New Year holiday testing continued to lag behind more typical rates.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the Iowa Department of Public Health said 1,121 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were added to the state total since the same time on Saturday, which now stands at 284,265. In total, 244,022 people are considered to have recovered from the disease, an increase of 804 people.

No additional people who died from COVID-19 have been added to the state total. Since the start of the pandemic, 3,946 people have died from the virus.

In Iowa, 577 people were hospitalized for the disease, a net increase of five people. 120 of those people are in intensive care, a net increase of one. 52 of those patients required the use of a ventilator, a net decrease of eight. 66 people were recently admitted to hospitals in Iowa during the 24-hour reporting period, the lowest total number of new admissions since Oct. 19.

An additional 2,634 people had reported test results from public and private labs in the past 24 hours, reflecting persistently diminished test numbers likely due to the holiday season. The positivity rate for this batch of tests was 42.6%, higher than the previous day’s 34.5%. The positivity rate calculated with this method may differ from the number on the state’s coronavirus dashboard, due to the fact that it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests, including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,364,344 people in Iowa have been tested since the start of the pandemic.
