Honduras completes implementation of the Asylum Cooperation Agreement with the US.

The United States Department of Homeland Security reported this Friday that the Cooperation Agreement on Asylum (HERE).

This agreement, signed in September 2019, stipulates that certain asylum seekers in the United States will be transferred to Honduras to apply for protection from our country.

“The completion of the United States-Honduras Cooperation Agreement on Asylum is a critical step to bring about a truly regional approach to migration and, more specifically, to provide protection for those migrants who are the victims of persecution” , said the acting secretary. National security, Chad F. Wolf.

Wolf added that “the success of the negotiations reflects the commitment of both governments to address migration challenges together.”

The governments of Honduras and the United States signed the ACA on September 25, 2019 to address the humanitarian crisis and security at the southern border of the North American country in light of the historic levels of irregular migration and human trafficking.

The agreement entered into force in March 2020 and its implementation was concluded on December 15 through the exchange of diplomatic notes.

Next Friday’s announcement means that all operational details regarding the implementation of the ACA have been worked out between the United States and Honduras.

The implementation of the ACA includes and facilitates cooperation between the two governments to expand Honduras’ capabilities to provide humanitarian protection.

In 2019 more than 71% of migrants Citizens of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have been detained by US authorities on the southern border.

The three countries have agreements with the Donald Trump administration to address illegal migration, and all agreements have entered into force.
