Honduran prisoner for murdering Peruvians in New Jersey

A Honduran who has been deported twice from the United States, according to immigration authorities, is going to jail for raping and murdering a Peruvian jogging in a park in New Jersey.

A judge on Thursday sentenced 35-year-old Jorge Ríos of Jersey City to 30 years in prison for the 2019 attack on Carolina Cano, 45, in Liberty Park. The judge also imposed a 10-year sentence to be executed simultaneously for aggravated assault.

According to Hudson County prosecutors, Rios admitted to sexually assaulting and strangling Cano. She lived in the United States for about two years and worked as a babysitter.

Police found his body in the lake in the park.

A resident of Honduras, Ríos entered the United States illegally and was deported in 2003 and 2004, immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) officials said.
