Honduran migrants in the US are administering covid-19 vaccines for their country

Miami.

The Honduran Foundation in the United States of September 15 is negotiating with the Medical College of Honduras (CMH) and US Congressman Ilhan Omar to send vaccines to the population over the “uncertainty of the health system” in the Central American country, exceeds 4,000 deaths from Covid-19.

“We are committed to sending the (US) Congress and the White House all information about the uncertainty and irresponsibility of the Honduran health system,” he told Efe on Friday. Juan Flores, president of the Sept. 15 Foundation, located in the county Broward (Florida).

According to Flores, CMH president Suyapa Figueroa spoke today about the complex health situation the country is going through, which is suffering from a dengue outbreak, in addition to the covid-19 pandemic.

According to Flores, the death rate in Honduras from covid-19 is higher than the official one. “It is well known with the death certificates of the funeral homes,” he said.

In Honduras, more than 70 doctors have died as a result of this pandemic since March 2020, Flores said, based on data provided by Figueroa in a video conference he attended Ryan Morgan, political adviser to Congressman Omar (D-Minnesota).

“There are no vaccines, yesterday they got 5,000 vaccines from Israel for 2,500 people because there are two doses, and Honduras has 9 million people. There are places where the health system does not come,” the activist added.

“We, the migrant community, support the Honduras Medical College to ask for help from the United States Congress. It is believed that when civilians do not have medicine, masses of emigrants leave the country, ”he noted.

According to Flores, congressman Omar’s adviser praised the “laborious work” of the president of the CMH.

“He surprised us, he knows Honduras very well. He was on a mission in our country between 2016 and 2018,” he said of Morgan.

About 180,000 Hondurans are concentrated in South Florida, most in Broward County, which is the capital Fort Lauderdale, and the total number of Hondurans in the US may have reached 1.5 million with the exodus in recent years, according to Flores.

Honduras received 5,000 doses Modern pharmaceutical vaccines against Covid-19 donated by Israel, which were administered by the government chaired by Juan Orlando Hernández.

The drugs, the first Honduras has received since the pandemic began to spread in March 2020, arrived on the Central American country’s presidential plane, which flew to Israel on Sunday and also made a donation to Guatemala

The vaccines will be administered to 2,500 front-line personnel fighting the pandemic.

Honduras has at least 4,009 deaths from Covid-19 and 168,243 infections, the state-run National Risk Management System (Sinager) reported Thursday.
