Homeschooled Arizona girl, 12, will start college this summer, hoping to work for NASA one day

This girl has goals for the moon – and beyond.

A 12-year-old Arizona girl who dreams of getting a job as a NASA engineer before she is old enough to vote will begin classes at Arizona State University this summer, KPNX in Phoenix reported.

When Alena Wicker was only 4 years old, she told her mother that she wanted to work for NASA, according to the report. Eight years later, she is still working towards that goal, with the goal of being hired at the age of 16.

“I’ve always dreamed of becoming an engineer because I’ve loved construction all my life,” Alena told KPNX.

“I just had a goal that I wanted to achieve,” she added.

Her mother, Daphne McQuarter, told the TV station that Alena has always been gifted. According to the report, Alena was homeschooled and took her classes.

“She just had a gift for numbers and Lego and science, so I started to cherish that gift,” McQuarter told KPNX.

According to the report, Alena plans to do a double major in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry. And McQuarter said the plan is still for Alena to be ready at age 16 so she can pursue a job at NASA.

At NASA, Alena said she wants to build rovers like the Perseverance that recently landed on Mars.

“I plan it all while I go,” Alena told KPNX. ‘It doesn’t matter how old you are or what you plan to do. Go for it, dream and then achieve it. ‘
