Holiday park COVID-19 vaccination site welcomes seniors without an appointment

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Demand for the COVID-19 vaccine is so high that drivers were lined up at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

For now, Holiday Park is vaccinating people 65 or older on a first-come, first-served basis, so this has forced them to close and reopen during the day to avoid crowds.

“We don’t want to create a traffic hazard on US-1, so we’ll close it when we get full, and when it opens again, we’ll let more people in,” said Chris Lagerbloom, Fort Lauderdale city manager. .

Ultimately, public health officials plan to make an appointment from the Holiday Park site on their own. The decision not to require appointments follows the inability of Broward residents to make appointments online.

The holiday park is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. But there were so many people on Thursday that they had to close temporarily at 1:00 PM

Dave Altneu made the cut.

“At the moment, we will be in good shape once we have that,” said Altneu. He will still need to get a second injection of the vaccine to have 95% protection.

Drivers with tags from other states also lined up at the Fort Lauderdale site because Governor Ron DeSantis does not require proof of residence to receive the vaccine in Florida.

“We really don’t discriminate against who gets the vaccines,” said Lagerbloom.

The average waiting time for those who made the cut was two hours.
