DETROIT – The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 587,581 on Saturday, including 15,522 deaths, state officials report.
Saturday’s update includes a total of 1,156 new cases and 68 new deaths – including 62 deaths identified during a review of records, meaning they didn’t occur between Friday and Saturday.
The state reported a total of 541,258 cases of recovery from the virus on Saturday.
On Friday, the state reported 586,425 confirmed cases, including 15,454 deaths.
State officials will stop providing updates on coronavirus data on Sunday; the next update is expected on Monday afternoon.
New COVID-19 cases have been flattened and the death toll has slowed. Testing has slowed over the past week, to an average of 35,000 diagnostic tests reported per day, with a 7-day positive rate below 4.0% as of Tuesday. Hospital admissions have continued to decline in recent weeks.

Michigan’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 1095 on Thursday – an increase from last week. The death average over seven days was 28 on Saturday. The state’s death rate is 2.6%. The state is also reporting “active cases,” which stood at 30,800 on Saturday – nearly the lowest since October.
Michigan has more than reported 2 million doses of COVID-19 administered, starting Thursday.
According to Johns Hopkins University more than 28.5 million cases have been reported in the US., with more than 511,300 dead reported by the virus.
Worldwide more than 113.6 million people are infected and more than 2.5 million have diedMore than 63 million have been recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are certainly much higher, due to limited testing, different ways nations count the dead, and deliberate under-reporting by some governments.

Wayne County has announced that it will open several vaccination clinics for residents 65 and older.
According to County Executive Warren Evans, vaccination clinics will begin on Feb. 23.
“I am pleased that Wayne County is now able to vaccinate seniors,” said Evans. “I know everyone is eager to get back to normal safely. Our team is working hard to ensure that all our residents can receive their COVID injection as soon as the vaccine is available. “
There are no running appointments and seniors must make an appointment by calling the site number in their community.

According to Michigan officials, the CDC says Pfizer vaccines were not shipped at all on Feb. 15 due to inclement weather. A limited amount of those vaccines will be shipped this week.
Modern COVID vaccine shipments were also affected, and due to weather, no shipments came out of the Memphis McKesson distribution center on February 15, 16, or 17. Some shipments of Moderna vaccines were also stopped last week due to weather conditions.
Officials say the CDC is working with the companies to resume distribution operations as soon as possible.
It is currently unclear whether any of Michigan’s Moderna vaccine orders will ship to the state on Thursday or Friday, February 18. MDHHS officials say more information will be shared as soon as it becomes known.
The news comes because several COVID-19 vaccination appointments have been rescheduled in Michigan this week due to harsh weather conditions.

For the second straight week, Michigan Medicine has announced that it can only give COVID-19 vaccine appointments to those who get their second injection due to limited vaccine supplies.
Only those who received their first dose through Michigan Medicine can receive their second dose at the health system vaccine clinics.
Those who have previously received an invitation to make an appointment for their first dose will be reminded that the invitation remains open. Michigan Medicine is asking those waiting for their first dose to come back next week to see if new appointments are available.

Michigan did not receive the amount of COVID vaccines expected from the federal government, causing the state to take some of the allocation from the first dose and shift it to the vaccines already scheduled for their second dose.
The decision means that some people who have an appointment for the first dose for next week may be delayed.
MDHHS with the help of MING polled local health departments and hospitals about the need for second-dose vaccines. We will address any shortages in second doses in the orders we place for shipping next week. About 37,300 doses of the ‘first dose’ allocation will need to be used to ensure complete vaccination for individuals needing a second dose, ”said Lynn Sutfin of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
