Note: The numbers posted on Monday, April 5, were lower due to the holiday weekend, and cases posted on Tuesday, April 6 are higher because it contains multiple days of data.
Tuesday’s COVID update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 3,014 new cases and four new deaths.
The four new deaths increase the state’s death toll to 6,889 over the course of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 62.4% (4,294) were long-term care residents.
Through April 4, the state reported that 1,841,585 people received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 1,192,051 people completed their vaccine series.
Forty-two percent of minnesotans ages 16 and older have received at least one injection.

Hospital admissions
Through April 5, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 497, which is more than 448 reported Monday.
Of those hospitalized through April 5, 114 were in intensive care (up from 110 reported on Monday) and 383 received non-ICU treatment (versus 338).

Test and positivity rates
The 3,014 positive results in Tuesday’s update came from 29,635 completed tests, creating a two-day test positivity rate of 10.17%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s positivity rate in the past seven days is 6.68%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a positive rate (total number of positives divided by total tests completed) of less than 5% for at least two weeks is required to safely reopen the economy. That 5% threshold is based on the total number of positives divided by the total number of tests.
