Helen McCrory, British actress best known for her roles in Harry Potter and Are dark materials, and more, died after a long battle with cancer. Her husband, actor Damian Lewis, announced via social media to inform the public on Friday, April 16.

She joined the Harry Potter franchise Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Narcissa, mother of Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) and wife of Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs). Her character appeared one more time in the two-part finale Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsOther genre roles include her guest starring role as alien vampire Rosanna Calvierri in Doctor who Season Five‘s “The Vampires of Venice”, and as the voice of Lord Asriel’s daemon Stelmaria in HBO and the BBC adaptation of Are dark materials

McCrory has a resume that spans decades on stage and on screen. McCrory has been nominated for a variety of awards throughout her extensive career, including a Critics Choice Television Award and a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Penny Triest

Speaking of Penny Triest– her character Evelyn Poole remains one of my favorite villains. As the Witch, Season Two Big Bad, she’s a powerful, merciless opponent with no mercy. Watching her go toe-to-toe with Eva Green in the season two showdown is a moment I’ll never forget:

McCrory was a skilled actress whose grace and talent will be missed.
