This is the heartwarming moment when a black Staffordshire terrier saved her canine friend from drowning in a backyard pool in South Africa.

Camera footage shows the black dog running to rescue the smaller toy Pomeranian that fell into the water after slipping on the edge of the pool in Boksburg City on April 8.

Seven-year-old Staffie dog Jessie senses that her boyfriend was in danger and repeatedly walks around the pool, reaching into the water to try to reach 13-year-old white dog Chucky as he fights to stay afloat.

Outdoor camera footage showed Chucky walking safely past the pool before being distracted by something in the yard and slipping in through the pool steps.

He frantically paddles his dog into the water to try to keep it afloat before Jessie rushes in to help.

The heroic female dog reaches into the water to grab Chucky, but his wet fur repeatedly slips from her mouth and he falls back.

After several failed attempts, she uses all her strength after 34 minutes of trying to get the exhausted dog to safety before they run off together.

Chucky was not injured in the incident, but the dog owners are concerned about what happened when they saw the two puppies wet.

Pet owner Byron Thanarayen said he and his wife Melissa looked at the poolside security camera to see what the two dogs might be doing.

He said, “We tried to look for clues where he could have gotten his head wet. We thought he might be dipping his head in the water, but there was no clutter in the house to back up this suggestion.

It was heartbreaking to watch. We’re still struggling to watch that video, thinking what could have happened if it wasn’t for Jessie. ‘

Byron added that the heroic pooch was a troubled rescue dog adopted by the couple four years ago.

The couple is her third adopted family after her previous foster parents returned her to the shelter.

Mr Thanarayen said previous owners complained that Jessie was difficult with other animals, but ‘she got on well with our other two dogs from the start’.

He added: ‘I am really proud of her as she is the youngest. Our dogs can swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not there. ‘

To avoid similar incidents in the future, the couple are now hiring workers to install a cover for their pool.
