HBO Max to remove ‘Chappelle’s Show’ at the request of Dave Chappelle

HBO Max has removed “Chappelle’s Show” with Dave Chappelle from the streaming catalog.

Casey Bloys, the streamer’s Cheif Content Officer, revealed the news during Variety’s Virtual FYCFest and stated it would no longer be offered by the end of the year.

“We had a conversation with Dave [Chappelle]. I will not go into it, but it is very clear that it is a very unique and specific and emotional problem that he has, ”said the director. “So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31st, we’re going to honor his request and shut down the show.”

The move comes just weeks after Netflix also pulled the content at the request of the comedian.

In a lengthy video on social media, the Emmy-winning star explained that he “never got paid” after he left the show.

“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle claimed. “But is that right? I found these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never had to. Tell me. Perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But is that right? didn’t think so either. ‘

The veteran stand-up praised Netflix, his current home for comedy specials.

“That’s why I love working for Netflix. I love working for Netflix because when all these nasty things happened to me, that company didn’t even exist. And when I found out they were streaming ‘Chappelle’s Show,’ I was furious,” said Chapelle, “How could they not – how could they not know? So you know what I did? I called them and I told them it made me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would do it. get it off their platform so I could feel better. “

“Chappelle’s Show” was broadcast on Comedy Central, owned by ViacomCBS, from 2003 to 2006.

Chappelle famously walked out of the series in 2005 after intense stress and creative disagreements with the network. Only three episodes were ready for the final season in 2006.
