Spokespersons for Hawley and Cruz did not specifically respond to calls from Democratic lawmakers on Monday to oust, censor, or strip GOP lawmakers from their committee duties.
Cruz, in an interview with a Texas television station KTRK, accused Democrats of breaking him down for political reasons.
“No one should be surprised when the Democrats play in politics and see them try to attack strong conservative leaders. That’s something Democrats have been doing for a long time. I think it’s really cynical that they try to take advantage of what was a tragic event, ”he said.
Hawley said last week, “I will never apologize for giving the vote to the millions of Missouri residents and Americans who are concerned about the integrity of our election.”
Hawley won the election for his first term and Cruz won re-election for his second term in 2018, meaning they won’t face voters again until 2024.
A Democratic senator would have to back a resolution to disapprove or oust Hawley or Cruz if she is to vote on both options. The possibility of an expulsion vote is considered much less likely.
“There were a few senators who were trying to figure that out,” said a Democratic aide to the Senate. “More and more members of the Democratic caucus are ready to vote yes on a resolution of censure.”
The Senate would disapprove of the senators by passing by majority a resolution formally disapproving of their behavior. A two-thirds majority of votes is required for an expulsion.
Article 1, Section 5 of the Constitution allows any chamber of Congress to establish its rules of procedure and to punish its members for disorderly conduct.
Hawley was the first GOP senator to announce that he would support challenges to the Electoral College. It was an important step because although House Republicans were already planning to object to several states, they needed a GOP senator to join them to trigger a debate and vote in both houses.
Days later, Cruz led a group of 11 GOP senators who said they would also object. They distributed a letter calling for the creation of a special committee to conduct a 10-day emergency audit of election results in states where the Trump campaign alleged widespread fraud – claims that were rejected by Republican and Democrat-appointed judges.
The efforts would always be pointless. There weren’t enough votes to throw out the results of fair elections in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and other states in the House or Senate, given backlash from Democrats and most Republicans – particularly in the Senate.
But the Senators’ objection prompted the Democrats that their actions contributed to the terror in the Capitol on Wednesday, when thousands of people who apparently believed conspiracy theories about the election broke through the police and walked through the halls seemingly look for lawmakers to harm. .
“Both @HawleyMo and @SenTed Cruz have betrayed their oaths of office and sparked a violent uprising against our democracy,” Brown tweeted Saturday. I call for their immediate resignation. If they don’t resign, the Senate must expel them. ”

Hawley and Cruz became further isolated in the Senate GOP after the mob attack, as several GOP senators dropped their plans to object.
Before Wednesday, Hawley and Cruz were seen as contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and their support of House Republican objections to Arizona and Pennsylvania election rules was seen as an attempt to gain favor with Trump supporters.
But the tactic failed, said Brian Darling, a Republican strategist and former Senate aide.
“I think it will be tough in the short term. Maybe in the long run they will get the ship right and do what they originally wanted, become the heir to Trump’s supporters, ”he said.
In the short term, Senator Hawley and Senator Cruz will face calls for resignation. They are having a very difficult time now. They need to explain that what they did was justified under the constitution and that Democrats did something in the past in 2016 and 2004, ”he said.
Chip Saltsman, another Republican strategist, said the political situation for Hawley and Cruz is looking worse in Washington than in mainstream America, where many Republicans are concerned about Trump’s claims of voter fraud.
“They have more problems in Washington, DC, then they are back home,” he said.
