Hawaiian Gardens hospital seeking 100 people amid reopening as a COVID treatment center

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, California (KABC) – A shuttered hospital in Hawaiian Gardens held a recruitment event Saturday morning, following a recent reopening as a COVID-19 treatment center.

The 137-bed Pacific Gardens Medical Center is looking for 100 skilled and unskilled nurses and other workers, including food services and cleaning staff.

Newly recruited employees will assist the emergency room, intensive care and coronavirus treatment unit personnel at the facility.

The hospital is also required to perform functions in the pharmacy, surgery and radiology departments, officials said.

Marilyn Evans from Pasadena hopes she will be one of those who will be hired. She recently worked with COVID-19 patients.

“They’re there alone, we’re constantly Faceting with families or on the phone with families, it makes it a little bit difficult, but that’s what we’re here for, to give them some kind of hope and tell them, keep pushing on, ‘she said.

The medical center, which was closed in 2017 after financial troubles, reopened earlier this week as part of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the surrounding community. The hospital’s new owners have spent more than $ 20 million on the renovation.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” said David Diamond, a spokesperson for the facility. “It requires all of our support staff. Inside that building are heroes. These are people who have given up much of their own personal lives for something that they think is incredibly important to the community.”

The facility hopes to be fully staffed by mid-April. Evans knows that this opportunity can also help a struggling community for her.

“They are in demand and I meet them every day. I just pray that I stay healthy to go to work,” said Evans.

Saturday’s job fair ended, but more applications would be accepted on Sunday from 10am to 2pm at Pacific Gardens Medical Center, 21530 South Pioneer Boulevard in Hawaiian Gardens.
