‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John defends film after viewers call it ‘sexist’

Olivia Newton-John spoke out to fans who recently slammed her iconic movie “Grease”, calling it sexist and misogynist.

“I think it’s a bit crazy,” said the 72-year-old on the podcast A Life Of Greatness. “I mean, this movie was made in the 1970s, around the 1950s.”

Newton-John played high school student Sandy Olsson who falls in love with local bad boy Danny Zuko (John Travolta).

“Grease” aired on the BBC over Christmas 2020, prompting people to voice their opinions on Twitter, the UK Express said.

One person said, “The drive-in / botched make-out session between Danny and Sandy hasn’t aged well. The movie slips right into the song (“ Sandy ”) before viewers register the date rapey vibe from the scene they just got seen # Fat. “

Another said, “Ahhh man. Just watch #Grease, one of my favorite movies and it’s so contemporary. Misogynistic, sexist and a little bit rapey.”

Someone else pointed out that there was very little diversity on the screen. “There were no black actors or high school students,” they wrote.

Newton-John said, “It was a play, it’s a musical, it’s fun. It’s a fun movie musical that shouldn’t be taken so seriously.”
