Graham’s comments come because most Senate Republicans are expected to acquit Trump on Saturday at the end of his second impeachment trial. Graham has been in close contact with the former president and spoke to him on Friday morning ahead of his attorney’s presentation.
The aftermath of the January 6 uprising shattered simmering divisions within the Republican Party over Trump. Party leaders and full members grapple with how much influence the former president should have. Many Republicans have condemned his rhetoric, but few distance themselves from him.
Trump has made it clear that he intends to remain active in Republican politics. He is under threat against Republican primaryans who are not behind him, including Senate Minority Whip John Thune (RS.D.), and is again considering a possible run for office in 2024.
“Trump must work with everyone,” said Graham. ‘You have to put your best team on the field. When it comes to revenge and going after people you don’t like, we’re in trouble. When it comes to putting your best team on the pitch, we have a decent chance of coming back. “
