Burr, a retiring Republican, voted on Saturday to condemn former President Trump based on the only article he had incited an uprising in the Capitol earlier this year.
“The evidence is compelling that President Trump has been guilty of instigating an uprising against an equal branch of the government and that the charge is rising to the level of high crimes and felonies,” Burr said in a statement Saturday. “That’s why I voted to condemn.”
The GOP in North Carolina hours later condemned Burr and joined the former president.
“North Carolina Republicans have sent Senator Burr to the United States Senate to uphold the constitution and his vote today to condemn a trial he has declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” the party chairman said.
