Gov. Greg Abbott to update the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Texas

SAN ANTONIO – Gov. Greg Abbott will provide an update Monday on the distribution of the state’s COVID-19 vaccine in Texas.

Abbott is expected to speak at a noon press conference at the Arlington Expo Center, one of the state’s massive COVID-19 vaccination sites. The press conference is live-streamed in this article, but delays are possible. If no live stream is available, check back later.

Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd, Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner John Hellerstedt and Texas Health Resources CEO Barclay E. Berdan will also be in attendance.

This week, 28 hub providers in Texas are expected to receive more than 158,000 doses of the vaccine. A total of 19,725 doses will go to two Bexar County hubs, according to the state: 9,000 Moderna vaccines will go to the Metropolitan Health District and 10,725 Pfizer doses will go to University Health.

The City of San Antonio will begin administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to those who qualify starting this week at Alamodome. It will be in operation all week, but registration to receive the vaccine was filled in minutes when it opened on Saturday.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff wrote a letter to Abbott on Sunday asking for more COVID-19 vaccines for Bexar County “as soon as possible.”

Another 38,300 doses go to other suppliers, including hospitals and clinics, across Texas. Click here to view week 5 vaccination allocations.

Texas is currently vaccinating health professionals, people 65 and older, and those with medical conditions that put them at greater risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the death toll in the state stands at more than 30,000 people, with hospital admissions due to the coronavirus steadily rising.

Johns Hopkins says that in the past two weeks, the moving average number of daily new cases in Texas has increased by 9,363.7, an increase of 76.9%.
