Google Photos’ new Memories feature 3D cinematic images

Google Photos will turn your old images into new types of memories in the coming weeks. The Memories feature displays old photos stored in your account in a story-like format similar to Snap and Facebook. These new types of memories can breathe new life into your old images, instead of showing them to you as they are. Cinematic photos, for example, add animation to previously still images.

The feature uses machine learning to predict the depth of an image and to create a 3D rendering of a scene. Then the photo is animated to generate a pan effect. Google Photos automatically generates cinematic images, but you need to make sure you have the latest version of the app. They appear at the top of your gallery just like other reminders, and you can save them or send them as a video to friends by clicking the share icon at the bottom.
