Now that Google account holders can say goodbye to unlimited free storage in Photos, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, Google’s One subscription service has gone from irrelevant to essential. In fact, we predict it will become inseparable from your account for years to come. In fact, for those interested in more premium Google service features and extra storage, this could become one of the most important plans in your budget.
We have said several times that Google should be doing a lot to gain users’ trust as they introduce subscription models to their users. They may be in a tight spot, but that same fear shouldn’t be passed on to their customers. Since YouTube TV subscribers have long received a free Chromecast with Google TV due to their loyalty, a few of you commented that Google’s goodwill was felt and seen in a tangible way. Now they’re taking it a step further to make the transition to paid more manageable – the price of Google One’s 10TB, 20TB and 30TB plans has been halved!
10 TB – $ 99.99 / $ 49.99
20 TB – $ 199.99 / $ 99.99
30 TB – $ 299.99 / $ 149.99
Their 100 GB ($ 1.99 per month / $ 19.99 per year), 200 GB ($ 2.99 / $ 29.99), or 2 TB ($ 9.99 / $ 99.99) plans will start don’t change in price today, so it is clear that this price cut is for businesses and less for individuals. You could certainly pay for over 10TB as a regular user, but for $ 50 a month, you’re better off just getting an external hard drive or SSD to store stuff. It’s good to have a backup in the cloud and we recommend this, but if you have more than 10 TB of data, you probably save file types that Google doesn’t allow in Drive, unless you’re a photographer or videographer are.
In addition to the price reduction, you will also receive 10% back on Google Store purchases when you purchase a subscription from 2 TB or more. Keep in mind that in the 2 TB plan, you get access to Google’s new native VPN, so get that for what it’s worth. The aforementioned price cuts appear to be permanent, and if Google wants to level the playing field, they will remain so. We can’t help but feel that once they have everyone on board, they’ll start to raise prices again after a few years and eventually get back to the full prices they originally started with! All this to say that Google is doing another good thing here and it’s appreciated, we’re just cautiously optimistic. Regular users don’t need to worry, of course, as they will continue to benefit from the base package prices.
