God of War has been patched to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5 and the results are phenomenal. For those needing a summary, the game ran at a solid 30 frames per second in 1080p on a standard PlayStation 4, but the PS4 Pro offered two options: resolution or frame rate. In resolution mode, the game used checkerboard rendering techniques to output a clean 4K image at 30 frames per second – or you could drop the resolution to 1080p and output it at 60 frames per second in framerate mode.
The problem is, at least on a PS4 Pro, the frame rate rarely reaches 60 frames per second, but fluctuates between 40 frames per second and 50 frames per second. Playing on a PS5 locked the frame rate at 60 frames per second, but you were still dealing with a 1080p image. With the new patch you can now play in checkboard 4K at a rock-hard 60 frames per second, without noticeable dips or fluctuations. The image quality is razor-sharp and the performance never falter.
The comparison video above shows just how good an upgrade this really is – it really looks fantastic on a PS5 now. We sincerely hope that more developers will follow in this footsteps and upgrade their PS4 classics so that they can sing on Sony’s new console. This is brilliant stuff.
