Since its unveiling last year, many have called it new God of war sequel to PlayStation 5 standard “God of War: Ragnarok”. This is mainly because Santa Monica Studio and PlayStation have not announced the formal name of the next installment in the God of war series will actually be. That said, another plague was allowed to come out God of war director and writer Cory Barlog is an indication, it looks like “Ragnarok” won’t be in the title after all.
In a new tweet from Barlog on Twitter, the famed video game director shared an article detailing the God of War: Ragnarok Naming. Barlog gave its own caption when sharing the tweet, asking, “How have I never heard of this game?” While not outright affirmed by him, it seems like a suggestion God of War: Ragnarok isn’t the name of the next game in the series after all.

That said, Barlog could just pull off everyone’s feet with this latest tweet. If you happen to follow Barlog on Twitter, you probably know he isn’t talking about the following God of war game so much. And even when he does, it is often in crafty ways like this that somehow poke fun at the project’s existence.
Still, it makes sense God of War: Ragnarok is not the name of the upcoming sequel at all. The only reason this title came about in the first place is because the game’s reveal trailer is simply the God of war logo next to the words “Ragnarok is coming.” Many then began to use God of War: Ragnarok as an abbreviation to refer to the upcoming title, although those working on the game in any capacity have never called it anything like that.
For now, we know everything with absolute certainty about the following God of war is that the release is scheduled for PS5 in 2021. A version of the game for PlayStation 4 could also be in the cards, but the powers left at Sony have not confirmed or denied this information.
