Gillian Anderson in love split: The Crown star is divorcing Peter Morgan after four years

Gillian Anderson and her writer-partner Peter Morgan, who worked together on the final season of The Crown, broke up amicably after four years together.

Fall actress Anderson, 52, and Morgan, 57, were one of the most gorgeous couples in the world of British entertainment, although they never shared a home.

Gillian has won numerous awards for her performance as FBI agent Dana Scully in The X-Files; and more recently acclaimed for her portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Season 4 of The Crown.

Peter was nominated for an Oscar for his script for the 2006 film The Queen, starring Helen Mirren; and full of praise for his stage productions, including Frost / Nixon and The Audience (about the monarch and her prime ministers); as well as for the making of The Crown.

They supported each other’s careers. Morgan was often seen on Anderson’s first nights, and they were often spotted together on the awards season circuit in Los Angeles and London.

But I’ve heard that the relationship has run its course – not helped by various work commitments and family logistics (each has children from past relationships) – although they remain good friends.

I reached out to representatives for both Anderson and Morgan this week, but they declined to comment.

Anderson, 52, is a quality actor who has sought powerful, complex roles in hits such as The Fall, where she played passionate murder detective Stella Gibson on the hunt for a sadistic serial killer; and sex education, where she is the main character’s sex therapist’s mother.

On stage she excelled as Blanche, in a thrilling production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Young Vic; and was fantastic in the recent adaptation of All About Eve, opposite Lily James.

She also starred in BBC TV’s dramatization of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House as the elegant and enigmatic Lady Dedlock.

Morgan, 57, who won a BAFTA for The Lost Honor Of Christopher Jefferies miniseries, is completing scripts and preparing to film the fifth season of The Crown next year with Imelda Staunton as our sovereign.

Reports that Gillian had found love with Peter erupted in October 2016 when The Daily Mail’s Sebastian Shakespeare confirmed that she was telling friends about dating the screenwriter.

Gillian, who lives in London, was with Peter at a party in New York to promote The Crown, where she heard friends say they were in a relationship.

Peter, whose movie hits include The Queen and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, was married to Lila Schwarzenberg – born Princess Anna Carolina zu Schwarzenberg – until 2014. He already has five children with her.

Since the relationship’s revelation, Gillian has supported Peter when The Crown went for a nomination at The Golden Globes.

Gillian has a daughter Piper, 26, with ex-husband Clyde Klotz, whom she was married to from 1994-1997.

She also has sons Oscar, 14, and Felix, 12, with ex-partner Mark Griffiths, whom she dated until 2012.

The Fall star was also married to documentary filmmaker Julian Ozanne from 2004-2006.

In January of this year, Gillian revealed that if they ever moved in together, it would be ‘the end’ of her relationship with her screenwriter partner and that she preferred the couple living in separate houses.

The Sex Education star told The Times that she liked that ‘there’s nothing locking us up’ by living apart, adding that they don’t have to worry about how they would manage logistics if they ever split up in the future .

Gillian said of her relationship with Peter: ‘If we did that, it would be the end of us. It works as well as it is, it feels so special when we come together. And when I’m with my kids, I can be there for them. It is exciting.

‘We choose when we are together. There’s nothing locking us up, nothing that triggers that fear of, “ Oh god, I can’t leave because what’s happening to the house, how are we going to get divorced? ”.

‘I’m starting to miss the person I want to be with, that’s a wonderful feeling. And it’s so tremendous for me to see pants on the floor at my partner’s house and step over them and not feel like it’s my job to do something about it! ‘

In November, Gillian insisted that she had “ very clear boundaries ” with her partner Peter when they collaborated on The Crown’s fourth series.

Gillian graced the front of Harper’s Bazaar, telling the publication, “For our own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries.

“I’m not going to comment on the script, but you can’t comment on the performance!”
