Pitching propelled the Giants through the first three weeks of the season, but with a bad night in that division, the team switched to power instead.
Buster Posey returned after two days of miss with a swollen left elbow and hit two homers and Tommy La Stella added his first of the season, a two-run shot. Then came the coup de grace, an eighth inning that included not one, but two three-run homers – by Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores – in a 10-7 victory that gave the Giants the series victory in Philadelphia with one game to play. .
“It was time for us to hit the accelerator and score some points,” said Dickerson. “And we were able to do it against a really tough pitching staff, so it was a great team win.”
Dickerson’s homer gave the Giants their first lead of the night, and Flores’ was a pinch-hit shot. Both came from Connor Brogdon, who had not given up a run in his previous 12 appearances last season and gave up only three hits in total in his six 2021 appearances that came in on Tuesday.
“The kind of offensive output like tonight isn’t going to happen every night, but I think it represents more of the kind of offense we are,” said manager Gabe Kapler. “It is also an example of one of the main strengths of our team, which is our bank.
“Every time we put in a starting line-up it’s always difficult because we know we have a few bats on the couch that should be playing for us on a regular basis every day.”
Posey, who had a three-hit night, was squashed on the elbow in Miami on Saturday and wore a sturdy elbow pad on Tuesday. That didn’t bother him in any way: in the fifth inning, he crushed a Zack Wheeler first pitch slider 130 yards to the left. In the sixth, he did the same on a 3-2 sinker, sending it 396 feet to the left.
It was the first multi-homer game of the year by a Giants player – and Posey’s first since May 28, 2016.
“I thought his swings were great,” said Kapler. “He had a lot of confidence from the moment he stepped into the batter’s box today. He said he was feeling good and ready to go. “
Posey, who signed out last season because he and his wife, Kristen, had just adopted premature twin babies, has four homers in his 11 games.
“People seem to forget when he didn’t play last year how good he really is,” said Dickerson. ‘He’s just been great. It was really cool to see him come back, see that fire again and how he handles a throwing staff. And then it seems clear that what he did with the bat is similar to what he did 10 years ago. “
However, with spawning the attack, the pitching was not as sharp as normal. Starter Logan Webb, back in the rotation with Johnny Cueto missing at least two starts with a lat strain, gave up four runs, three of them on a homer by Brad Miller in the third.
Webb had a great spring and only allowed in 17 innings. But it’s a different story since: Webb gave up 10 runs in four outings, three starts and 15 ⅓ innings. “I think in part it’s just his ability to get through some tough moments in the game, maybe it’s a few throws here and there,” said Posey before the game.
Jarlín García, who also struggled to open the season, gave up a two-run homer to Alec Bohm in the fifth and his ERA is 8.53. Jake McGee, just off the COVID-19 list after two days of persistence from his second vaccination, gave up a solo blast from Rhys Hoskins in the ninth.
Brandon Belt, who made an excellent over-the-shoulder catch on foul territory in the seventh, left the game in the bottom of the ninth with what Kapler described as quad-tightness.
