Giant Lizard Goes Through Supermarket, Wild Video Goes Viral

“Godzilla vs. Kong” wasn’t the only massive lizard drama this week.

A huge Asian water monitor terrified shoppers after a “King of the Monsters” -like rampage by a 7-Eleven in Bangkok, Thailand. The original video tweet of the incident was viewed nearly a million times before it was removed.

The terrifying clip, reposted to Facebook, shows the monster reptile scaling a shelf of milk, throwing off cardboard boxes and making spectators scream in shock.

“The shelves are falling apart! Oh my God, ”says a voice shouting over the reptilian intruder who, at up to eight feet in length, is the world’s second largest lizard after the Komodo dragon, according to Everything Reptiles.

The clip ends with the water monitor resting on top of the shelf near the ceiling, while bystanders laughed in the background.

Fortunately, despite their sheer size, the opportunistic predators do not pose a threat to adult humans but choose to enjoy everything from eggs to small mammals and carrion, according to experts at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. (However, a dead child was found partially eaten by monitors in South Thailand in May 2020.)

Nonetheless, the scaled shopping spree left social media on a whim.

“Godzilla are real guys,” one spectator wrote on social media. Another described the scene as ‘nightmarish’.

“If you’re hungry visit 7-Eleven, huh?” snapped a social media comedian in reference to the supermarket chain’s motto.

It is not known why the lizard entered the store at all, although some speculate that it was trying to escape the humid outside temperatures.

This isn’t the first time a monitor lizard has scared people. In 2016, large scavengers took over Bangkok’s Lumpini Park, damaging flora and astounding visitors, the Bangkok Post reported.

Meanwhile, in a now-viral clip from a Japanese game show, a monitor was unleashed on female contestants wearing slices of meat on their heads.
