It is undeniable Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 saw the saddest parting between Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo). When Gianniotti first appeared as DeLuca in Grey’s Anatomy Season 11, many fans didn’t realize how important the character would be to Meredith. Eventually, the couple got together and fell in love. After their split, they continued to show up for each other.
Of course, Meredith and DeLuca’s relationship status was in the air Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. So many viewers hoped they would be the end game. But then DeLuca died in Episode 7 entitled “Helplessly Hoping.” The character was stabbed and lost too much blood to survive.
Meanwhile, Gianniotti revealed it was a “good time” to leave Grey’s Anatomy
“I am six years old, seven seasons on the show. It has certainly been a long time, and I am a young guy, ”the actor told Deadline. “I think this was a good time to leave, and I’m glad Krista [Vernoff] and Debbie [Allen], and all the writers have done so well in telling the story. “

Before DeLuca died at Gray Sloan Memorial in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, the character appeared on Meredith’s dream beach. The former lovers spent the day together. As they watched the sunset, DeLuca’s dead mother appeared and began calling his name.
DeLuca expressed his joy. Meanwhile, Meredith smiled back understanding. “I’ll miss you,” she said. “If I go back and you don’t, I’ll miss you.”
“It’s gonna be okay, Meredith. It will. You’ll be fine, ”DeLuca replied. “I have to go.”
Then DeLuca ran to his mother when he died in the operating room.

After DeLuca’s death in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Gianniotti opened up about his final scene with Pompeo in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada. In the end, Gianniotti was happy to spend the day with his good friend and mentor. Still, it was bittersweet to say goodbye to Meredith and DeLuca on screen. Gianniotti said:
When the writers decided to let us like interests, we started to get closer and spend more time together. So it was sad, you know, the beach was my last scene with Ellen. It was fun in a way because we got to spend this day together on this beach, just to close the circle. … But we’re not going to share the screen anytime soon, which is sad. That is something we are both sad about and reminisce about.
That said, Gianniotti noted that his true friendship with Pompeo is still alive – even after Grey’s Anatomy
“Of course we’re not going anywhere,” he said. ‘We are still friends. We can still see each other. “
