Golf icon Tiger Woods drove a Genesis GV80 SUV on Monday when he was involved in a car accident in Los Angeles, authorities and Genesis confirmed to FOX Business.
Woods “underwent a long surgical procedure on his right lower leg and ankle after being taken to hospital,” a statement posted on his Twitter account. The vehicle has sustained major damage.
“Genesis was sad to learn that Tiger Woods had been in an accident in a GV80,” Dana White, Genesis Motor North America’s chief communications officer, told FOX Business in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Tiger and his family right now, as we wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

Woods was in LA last weekend to host the tournament of the Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club, where he presented the trophy on Sunday.

The 2021 Genesis GV80 has a starting price of $ 48,900. The car features a 300 hp engine, a 14.5-inch horizontal touchscreen on the center console and an 8-inch digital instrument panel. It has 10 airbags, a collision warning system, evasive steering technology and an interior camera to warn drivers if they fall asleep.
LA County sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference on Tuesday that the vehicle’s safety features may have saved the golfer’s life.
“The cabin of the vehicle was more or less intact, the front was completely destroyed – the bumpers, everything was destroyed, the airbags deployed – all of that,” he said. “Fortunately, however, the interior was more or less intact, giving him the cushion to survive what would otherwise have been a fatal crash.”

Woods apparently drove at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle before crossing a center divider, anonymous law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times. Woods’s SUV reportedly rolled several times before coming to a stop.
The sources added that Woods had to be removed from the car’s windshield. The front of the SUV turned out to be badly damaged.

Officials have not revealed the cause of the accident. An ambulance took Woods to a hospital in serious condition, and a traffic investigation is being conducted by LASD’s Lomita Station.

“Mr. Woods sustained significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated by orthopedic trauma specialists during emergency surgery,” said Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where the legendary golfer was treated after the accident. a statement shared on Woods’ Twitter.
Mahajan’s statement continued, “ Minor open fractures affecting both the upper and lower parts of the tibia and fibula were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscles and soft tissue of the leg required surgically releasing the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure from swelling. “
