Gastric band surgery does not guarantee an ideal weight if you are not eating a healthy diet, nutritionists warn

Overweight people, especially young people, opt for surgeries that reduce the size of the stomach, but this procedure does not guarantee the ‘ideal weight’ but follows a healthy diet, warned the College of Nutritionists of Peru (CNP).

The dean of the CNP, LIC Antonio Castillo Carrera, pointed out that in these times of pandemic it has become fashionable for many young people to opt for bariatric surgery as an option to lose weight.

However, he explained that these procedures are aimed at people who are morbidly obese and not overweight, that is, overweight. While many celebrities have opted to have surgery, in the case of young people, it is ideal to prefer nutritional evaluation and monitoring.

Antonio Castillo recalled that these surgeries are irreversible and that the patient must follow a strict nutritional regimen to lose weight and remain stable. Because if the person thinks their stomach has already gone down, he can eat whatever he wants, he was wrong.

What can happen is that you gain weight and don’t tolerate the foods you eat, develop eating disorders, as well as tolerance to food and digestion, have problems like reflux, “since your digestive system won’t be like it was before.”

The dean of the CNP advised to lose weight in a sustainable, adequate and personalized way if you want to lose weight in a healthy way, as indicated in the nutritional discussion with the nutritionist. It requires the patient’s commitment to eat an adequate diet and exercise, under the supervision of a professional nutritionist.
