Yes, the time has finally come: 2020 was the year we actually got a remake of Final Fantasy VII. Good, part of at least one. It may not cover the full story, but Final Fantasy VII Remake bears its love of the original game as a badge of honor. It’s as much a tribute to classic Japanese role-playing as it is a reinvention – but those of you who’ve played it out will know it’s somehow even more than that.
From the brilliantly crafted combat system to the great soundtrack, Remake does so many things well. It’s both a powerful journey of nostalgia and a gripping adventure in itself, and it does an especially great job of working out a cast of already beloved characters. It is truly an achievement.
Now we’re not saying that Final Fantasy VII Remake is perfect – it certainly has its fair share of flaws – but there’s no denying the mere number of memorable moments it paraded for the player. We won’t spoil any of those moments here, but there’s no question that Remake has had a lasting impact on our views on the cloud and the business.
And those boss fights! It’s fair to say that Remake has some of the biggest boss fights not only of 2020, but on PS4 in general. We replayed the game several times to relive some of these encounters, and that also shows the power of the title’s seriously impressive combat system, which blends action almost perfectly with turn-based commands.
So much could have gone wrong with Final Fantasy VII Remake, but here we are, looking at a true Game of the Year contender. A great game and hopefully the start of something really special.

How we decide our game of the year: In December, our editorial team compiled a list of Game of the Year nominees based on our own review scores and a number of other factors. After much discussion, we narrowed down the list of nominees and asked all Push Square employees and the Push Square community to vote for their five favorites using a points system. The ten games with the most points by the stated deadline were then determined as our 2020 favorites.
