“I want to get into this because it just happened,” Faulkner told Trump as he attacked the Biden administration over the proliferation of migrants at the US-Mexico border. “I want to check this again with our producers.”
Faulkner continued, “DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has stepped down, Mr. President.”
Trump, who attacked Mayorkas as “pathetic” and “no idea” in a statement Sunday, then celebrated.
“I’m not surprised,” Trump said. “Good. That’s a big win for our country.”
Faulkner, visibly confused when she tried to listen to her producers, then backed out.
‘Wait a second. Make me stop, make me stop. Let me listen to my team one more time, ”Faulkner said. ‘Forgive me. Forgive me. That didn’t happen, but – my apologies. ‘
Faulkner suggested that “listening to the team” and Trump had at the same time created confusion that led to the error.
A Fox spokesperson said the error “stemmed from an audio issue in a virtual workspace. We corrected the error and continued with the interview.”
Nonetheless, it is unusual for a national news anchor to misreport a cabinet secretary’s resignation – especially if there was no reason to believe such a resignation would take place.
A Fox spokesperson gave no explanation.
