Florentino Perez believes all six English clubs withdrew from the Super League after one of them started to get itchy feet over the widely condemned proposals.
The Super League is in tatters three days after launch, after all six Premier League teams, as well as Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan, have pulled out of plans that would turn the European top league into a ‘closed shop’ made. ‘
Massive protests from supporters, pundits, players and politicians led to the league’s apparent demise, but Real Madrid president Perez insists it is not dead yet and is just ‘standby’.
In another explosive and lengthy interview late on Wednesday night, in which he again did not sell anyone under the Super League, he blamed a single Premier League club for the embarrassing failure of the project.
Speaking to Spanish radio station El Larguero, as translated by Guillem Balague, Perez said, “Someone in the English group wasn’t that interested and that was contagious, others showed fear and walked back.”
When the presenter then asked if that club was City, Perez declined to answer before saying, “They were never interested.”
In an interview in which Perez mainly complained that Madrid will no longer be able to sign the world’s biggest stars, such as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, he ominously claimed that the Super League has not ended yet.
Perez has claimed that Milan and Juventus are still in the league, despite both clubs having released official statements announcing their withdrawal on Wednesday.
“The European Super League has not ended,” he said. “Juventus, Milan, have not left. Barcelona is thinking about it. We could consider the four best clubs in each league. The aim is to play more interesting matches.”
“The Super League is not dead, we will continue to work on this project. Now it is on standby.”
